Paul Pankert
Belgian violinist and composer Paul Pankert studied in Liège, Düsseldorf, and Maastricht. A member of Ensemble ’88 and co-founder of the Kl-Ex Ensemble, he performs widely across Europe and champions contemporary music.
His first composition 'Spaltung' won the 2008 Royal Academy of Belgium competition, and he has since created numerous commissioned works for ensembles and festivals including Ars Musica Brussels, Orgelpark Amsterdam, and Festival van Vlaanderen. Awarded “Artist of East Belgium” in 2017, he teaches at the Music Academy of the German-speaking Community of Belgium and directs Ensemble 88.
His second CD ‘Connected’ and his Toccata for harpsichord and live electronics, winner of the 2021 Prix Annelie de Man, highlight his innovative, experimental approach.
In this album, Paul Pankert explores the dialogue between Baroque music and contemporary creation, blending violin and live electronics. Alternating works by Bach and Biber with his own compositions, he transforms Baroque forms, replacing basso continuo with electronics.
Original works Connected I, Breaking News, and Partita Ritardata explore sound, media, and form, closing with Great Again, a rap reimagined in Renaissance polyphony.
